Dublin’s 3Arena plays host to one of the biggest fights in women’s boxing this weekend, as undisputed lightweight champ Katie Taylor squares up against undisputed super lightweight champ Chantelle Cameron.
Taylor’s first fight in Ireland since turning pro, the epic matchup comes after Amanda Serrano pulled out of their highly anticipated rematch due to injury, with Cameron stepping in to pose a completely new challenge.
Topping the Bill
Making history last April when Taylor and Serrano were the first female fighters to headline a show at Madison Square Garden, the fierce contest didn’t fail to deliver, with Taylor edging the judges’ scorecards to win by split decision.
The momentous occasion and result set the fighters up for a rematch, but following the news of Serrano’s injury in February, Taylor was quick to call out Cameron for her belts.
As the Bray-born boxer sets her undisputed crown aside to chase a second one in a heavier weight class, someone’s 0 will have to go.
From Undisputed to Underdog
Whether you’re keen on your boxing or just a casual fan, everyone will have heard the name Katie Taylor. But does everybody know Chantelle Cameron?
She may not have the high profile like her opponent has, but ‘Il Capo’ is a dangerous test for Taylor.
In her own right, she’s dominated the super lightweight division, racking up eight knockouts across a 17-win pro career.
First securing the vacant WBC belt against Adriana dos Santos Araujo in unlikely circumstances (Araujo failed to make weight so only Cameron could win the belt), she made sure the boxing scene was on watch by also bagging the IBF title a year later against Mary McGee.
She would defend these belts once more before beating Jessica McCaskill out in Abu Dhabi to be crowned undisputed super lightweight champ in November.
Despite holding all five belts, Cameron heads into Taylor’s ‘Homecoming’ as the underdog.
Fight Night
The pair will battle it out in Dublin across 10 rounds, with ring walks for the main event expected at 10pm.
Fans won’t have to wait that late for the fireworks to kick off though, as Terri Harper defends her WBA super-welterweight title against Cecelia Braekhus, while Dennis Hogan faces James Metcalf and local lad Thomas Carty takes on Jay McFarlane in the heavyweight division.
