It wouldn’t be winter without the Nuptse. Rooted in outdoor exploring. Built to last. Here’s everything you need to know about the Nuptse jacket.
Powered by its mantra, ‘Never Stop Exploring’, The North Face has made a big name for itself when it comes to outdoor gear. And whether you’re repping the Half Dome up in the peaks, or down at street level, you know the quality holds up for every adventure.

The Nuptse puffer jacket’s one of The North Face’s signature silhouettes. The OG puffer coat that’s been around since the ‘90s. An absolute essential. This one comes back every year. Trust.
Behind the brand
The North Face was founded back in 1966. Started by husband and wife Douglas and Susie Tompkins, it began as a small shop in San Francisco, California, selling rock climbing and camping gear.
As the brand grew and grew, The North Face was integral in changing the meaning of what ‘backpacking’ could be. It introduced the Ruthsack in 1969 – one of the first ever internal frame packs. It revolutionised the hiking experience and made the outdoors way more accessible.
The brand’s led the way when it comes to fusing innovation with street style. Your go-to gear for any expedition.
Need to know: about the Nuptse
The North Face first launched the Nuptse jacket in 1992. A game-changing layer that was designed to take climbers up to the top of the tallest peaks. The first edition boasted a new baffle construction that delivered on maximum warmth and minimised down shifting. Soon, it was spotted on explorers all over the globe.
Nuptse means ‘west peak’ in Tibetan, taking its name from a Nepali peak about a mile southwest from Mount Everest.
Now, the Nuptse jacket blends heritage design with modern tech and fabrics. A boxy silhouette is enhanced with the classic oversized baffle. A plush goose down fill locks in the heat for premium warmth without too much weight. And the original ripstop shell protects you from the elements with a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) finish.
A lightweight hood stows away into the collar. A toggled Shockcord through the hem lets you cinch the fit. And when the weather can’t make its mind up, the Nuptse packs up into the inside pocket as well.

How to clean a The North Face Nuptse jacket
The North Face’s gear is built to last. But it still needs the right care to keep it at its best.
A little goes a long way. Wipe away dirt from the shell of your Nuptse jacket after you wear it for light maintenance.
Need to give your Nuptse a proper wash? You need to take special care when cleaning a down product. Here’s what The North Face recommends:
Wash your Nuptse jacket in a front-loading washing machine. Use warm water with a down-specific liquid detergent. Choose a gentle cycle with a low spin, and give it an extra rinse and spin if you need to, to remove as much soap and water as you can.
Remember to close up all the zippers and Velcro fastenings to avoid any accidental damage. And when it’s done washing, scoop it up from the bottom to take it out of the machine instead of lifting it.
You can hang your Nuptse out to dry naturally. Or use a tumble dryer on a low setting over a longer space of time. You can add tennis balls or dryer balls to help make sure the down fill doesn’t clump together in the tumble dryer.
But if your Nuptse jacket won’t fit inside your washing machine or tumble dryer, it’s best to leave it to the pros to get it cleaned.
