The Best Cushioned Running Shoes

No matter if you’re starting your running journey or taking on a marathon, there’s something all runners need – running trainers.

As world records continue to get smashed at elite levels, high tech running shoes are makin bigger strides than ever before.

With stacks of new runners on the scene, we know all the techy stuff can get confusing.

No stress though. We’re gonna run through all the latest cushioning tech across big brand runners to get you up to speed.

Ready? Alright, let’s do this.

adidas

It’s no secret, adidas are killin it with their running trainers. Bouncing on to the block in 2013, adidas’ Boost technology has been revolutionary.

Before Boost entered the game, EVA foam was the industry standard in runners – but adidas had other ideas.

Boost uses a midsole that’s made from thousands of expanded particles that work together to deliver max energy return.

Lightweight, durable and flexible. Boost has got everything a top tier runner needs.

Some Boost silhouettes like the iconic adidas Ultraboost have even made their way on to the streetwear scene. Let’s be real, it was too good to gatekeep.

On Running

On Running, one of the leading powerhouses in the industry. They’ve got performance runners nailed down.

First appearing in 2010, their focus on elite Swiss-engineering has pushed em up the ranks in no time.

Looking for the ultimate cushioning comfort? Say no more. Let CloudTec technology do all the talking.

Featuring across all On’s silhouettes, CloudTec is a completely unique cushioning system.

Its job is to absorb impact, reduce strain and adapt to your running. The clues in the name, it really does make you feel like you’re steppin on clouds.

It’s not just CloudTec that’s got your back in On Running’s shoes. Say hello to Speedboard.

The Speedboard turns the energy you create into momentum, bending and flexing with your strides to move your forward even faster.

ASICS

Founded back in 1949, ASICS’ shoes have been at the forefront of running and streetwear culture for some time now.

Sticking true to its roots, the Japanese born brand knows exactly what it’s doing with its running shoes.

Two words. GEL Technology. Shock absorption? Check ✅ Improved stability?  Check ✅ Reduced impact? Check again ✅

ASICS’ revolutionary GEL tech has got all it all, especially if you’re racking up some serious mileage. Comfort is key, and GEL tech certainly delivers.

ASICS running shoes like the GEL-Terrain are packed full of high-performance tech that’s perfect for any distance.

HOKA

Designed for runners, HOKA running shoes are elite. Trust us on this one. Born in 2009, it didn’t take them long to become one of the most popular running trainer brands around.

Whether you own a pair or are considering a new cop, here’s a quick breakdown of what makes em so popular.

HOKA’s shoes all have three key pieces of tech that prioritises comfort.

Firstly, the cushioned midsole. It acts as high-performance shock absorber, keepin things light while protecting your step.

Next up, the Active Footframe. Engineered to cradle your foot by raising or lowering the midsole walls, it results in total support and confidence as you go the full distance – no matter the surface.

Completing the trio is the MetaRocker. This provides a smooth and efficient transition underfoot.

Its curved shape means it can be dialled up for faster transition in the forefoot, or down for extra stability and ground contact.

Nike

From the trails to the streets, Nike running shoes have got all bases covered. But what makes them stand out?

Across the line-up, different running trainers call for different tech.

First off, Air Zoom. Small and low-profile, they have strong threads inside that provide an explosive sensation as you kick off your run.

Combining a focus on enhanced energy return and a reduced carbon footprint, ReactX foam also offers a super smooth ride as you rack up those all-important miles.

For high performance running, Nike takes things up another notch with its ZoomX cushioning.

Lighter, softer and more responsive than any other Nike foam, it delivers supreme cushioning without any weight.

Originally used in aerospace innovation, it’s here to change the game with its high-energy return as you put in the work.

Salomon

With its roots in the heart of the French Alps, Salomon’s runners are equipped for all conditions.

For all round comfort, SensiFIT technology offers the support you need. It cradles your foot all the way from the midsole to the lacing system, providing a super secure and customised fit.

EnergyCell tech in the midsole is designed for shock absorption. No matter how rough the terrain is, EnergyCell has got you.

Want the ultimate cushioning experience? Look out for energyFOAM+ and energyFOAM evo tech.

energyFOAM+ is a super foam composition that’s made from a mix of PEBA and EVA for a dynamic feel.

On the other hand, energyFOAM evo is lightweight and offers superior energy absorption and energy return.

Altra

Another ‘new’ brand, Altra’s been in the running game in 2009.  Focusing on relieving stress instead of putting more stress on the body, Altra amps up the comfort in all their runners.

In silhouettes like the Olympus 6, Experience Wild and Experience Form, Altra have added a compression moulded EVA foam midsole.

Keepin things light, it offers a smooth and responsive ride as you get those steps in, putting cushioning before anything else.

Other models like the Torin 7 use Altra’s own EGO Max midsole. This provides a cushioned and responsive ride; while adding a little extra bounce so you can kick things off quickly.

New Balance

Despite breaking into streetwear, New Balance is still bringin the heat with high-performance runners. Sticking true to its heritage, New Balance focuses on comfort.

With silhouettes like the FuelCell Rebel v4, New Balance uses FuelCell foam underfoot.

For long and steady or short and spontaneous runs, FuelCell gives you that propulsive feel to drive you forward.

Whether it’s a 5k or a marathon, FuelCell is geared towards both short and long-distance runs. (And yes, the late morning run to the train counts).

Under Armour

Under Armour. A brand that’s centred around improving and inspiring athletes. And they certainly stick to that with their runners.

Using different types of cushioning, each shoe is stacked full of tech to give you that responsive ride you need.

Featuring on a number of their trainers, Charged Cushioning absorbs impact and returns energy, so you can keep up the pace no matter the terrain.

Other models like the Turbulence 2 use UA HOVR cushioning, which does the same thing, except with a little extra spring compared to the balanced feel of Charged.

And that’s a wrap!

Alright, that’s us over and about. You gotta be at expert level now. Considering a new pair of runners? You’re in the right place.

Before you cop new running shoes, maybe consider taking a gait analysis or test out their fit in-store, you wanna make sure they’re right for your rotation.
