This Week: Benn v Algieri

Boxing heads back to Liverpool this weekend as Conor Benn defends his WBA Continental Welterweight title against Chris Algieri.

Fighting in front of a packed M&S Bank Arena, Benn will look to round off a successful year in the ring, beating Samuel Vargas in April and Adrian Granados back in September.

Can the Record Continue?

Benn comes into this fight with a highly impressive 19-0 record, with 12 of those wins coming by knockout. His last fight against Granados was a needed test for the 25-year-old as the durable Mexican took Benn the distance, making sure the Brit was made to work for his victory.

Benn – nicknamed ‘The Destroyer’ – showed he’s not just all about the big knockout, picking his moments of quick combinations and power punches to grind Granados down.

With calls coming for world title fights soon, this next fight against Algieri seems like the perfect opportunity to stake his claim for a huge fight in 2022.

The Next Step

From Benn and Matchroom promotor Eddie Hearn’s perspective, Algieri is a level above his previous opponents, bridging the gap between past fights and the big names in the division.

But Algieri will have different ideas. The man fighting out of Huntington, New York, has a strong career of 25 wins to just 3 defeats. Those losses have all come in world title fights against Manny Pacquiao, Amir Khan and Errol Spence Jr, taking both Pacquiao and Khan the full 12 rounds.

In addition to his experience, the American stands the taller of the two men and has the greater reach. However, this advantage hasn’t transferred into knockout power across his career, stopping his opponents just 9 times.

Will Benn continue to live up to his name, or will Algieri pull out the win of his career? With the main event expected to start at 10PM, you don’t wanna’ miss this!

Backing Up the Bill

Before the headline fight takes place, the Liverpool fans will have plenty to be excited about! Katie Taylor defends her undisputed lightweight crown against Firuza Sharipova, while Jordan Gill returns to the ring after 10 months out as he takes on Karim Guerfi for the European Featherweight title. Robbie Davies Jr also features, fighting Hank Lundy for the vacant WBA Continental Super-Lightweight title.
