The PUMA Suede Story
Launching back in ’68, the PUMA Suede has become one of PUMA’s most celebrated kicks of all time. From the court to the streets, the Suede was THE sneaker to lace up in – leading to it becoming a cultural icon.
It all started at the 1968 Olympic Games when Tommie Smith received his medal holding the all-new Suede, followed by the game-changing Walt ‘Clyde’ Frazier. Back in ’73, Frazier was one of the biggest stars in the NBA, playing for the New York Knicks. On and off the court, his style made waves and in the ‘70s, he was made brand ambassador for PUMA. Frazier was the first ever basketball player to be gifted his own signature sneaker, and PUMA made him his very own edition of the Suede, the ‘Clyde’.
Continuing to grow in the ‘80s, PUMA’s Suede showed no sign of slowing down…From skateboarding to breakdancing, the Suede cemented itself in a number of different circles.
