A Look Back at the Air Jordan 11
When Jordan made his comeback to the court in March ’95, behind-the-scenes, he was working with Nike’s design legend Tinker Hatfield on some brand new heat; the Air Jordan 11.
Having already created some legendary Jordan silhouettes, as well as the likes of Nike’s Air Max 90, Tinker Hatfield was at the top of his game! He watched carefully how Michael Jordan played on the court, and wanted to create a durable AND stable sneaker that could help boost his performance.
With a need for a basketball sneaker that was prepared to be tested and pushed to its absolute limits, that’s where Hatfield thought to use patent leather; a now-iconic feature of the Air Jordan 11. The AJ11 has a ballistic mesh upper for an ultra-light and flexible finish. The patent leather overlay adds essential durability, as well as a look that’s just as at home on the streets as it is the courts.
Arguably one of Hatfield’s all-time favourite designs, the Air Jordan 11 sits high on Hatfield’s list thanks to its technology. Underfoot, they’re equipped with a lightweight carbon fiber spring plate for an ultra-responsive ride, as well as a full-length cushioning unit for supreme comfort.
Before the sneaker hit shelves, Michael Jordan insisted on wearing Hatfield’s samples – first up the ‘Concord’ colourway. Every time he stepped onto the court lacing up in the 11’s, Jordan incurred a fine of $5,000 from the NBA. But it didn’t stop him.
The ‘Bred’ Colourway
The Black/True Red-White colourway aka. ‘Bred’ was the third colourway repped by the Air Jordan 11. Ranking right up there among Jordan grails, the ‘Bred’ colourway was first seen in 1996, shortly after Jordan made his comeback to the NBA.
When Michael Jordan carried the Chicago Bulls to their 4th NBA Championship, he was lacing up in the legendary ‘Bred’ colourway, leaving sneakerheads wanting to cop. Since then, the Air Jordan 11 ‘Bred’ has been retro’d just three times, back in 2001, 2008 and 2012.
Inspired by the Chicago Bulls, these sneakers have a black upper with a glossy, tonal black mudguard in patent leather. They’re sat on a contrasting white midsole and rep a bold True Red outsole with a grippy rubber tread for traction. Staying true to the OG, they’re finished up with the legendary Jumpman logo and an original #23 to the heel, which pays homage to the GOAT.
