From 1901 to Now
Throw it back to 1901 in Wollaston, Northamptonshire, and the Griggs family were known for making sturdy boots. Producing them for six decades, the family earned a solid reputation.
By the ‘60s with the third generation working on boots, the Griggs’ came across a German advert for an innovative air-cushioned sole. Ditching their traditional leather sole, the family changed the game by acquiring a license and stitching their signature boots to the air-cushioned sole. That’s where it all began!
The signature Dr. Martens details like the yellow welt stitching, two-tone grooved sole edge and the unique sole pattern featured on the first eight-holed 1460 Dr. Martens boot. Not stoppin’ there, they were branded ‘Airwair’ too, with the legendary black and yellow heel loop that we still see on silhouettes today.
In the decades that followed, Dr. Martens made waves. The ‘70s saw the emergence of the likes of punk and early goth, with each subculture taking on the boot. By the ‘80s, the brand saw the demand from women too, and in the ‘90s even more music genres adopted the boot, meaning it went hand in hand with festival culture.
Today, we’ve seen the legendary boots being repped by a range of celebs, musicians, and free-thinkers – each lacing up in DMs as part of their own, distinctive style.
