Overcome the Odds: Run with the Record Breakers

Needing inspo’ to get back on the treadmill? We got you.

It’s been a record-breakin’ time for runners and we’re looking to the athletes overcomin’ the odds (and showin’ you the sneaks you need to set your own personal best!)

Eliud Kipchoge

34-year-old Kenyan runner, Eliud Kipchoge, broke the world record for the fastest marathon ever on 12th October.

Smashing expectations, the athlete covered 26.2 miles in just one hour, 59 minutes and 40 seconds at the Ineos 1:59 Challenge in Vienna, Austria.

Kipchoge said;

“This shows no-one is limited.”

Runner

“Now I’ve done it, I am expecting more people to do it after me.”

Kipchoge had to run 100m in 17.08 seconds 422 times in a row at a speed of 13.1 mph to get his record breaking time. The runner wore a bespoke pair of Nike’s Vaporfly Trainers – AlphaFLY. Did you know that Nike’s Vaporfly runners have been worn by athletes running the five fastest marathons in history?

Allyson Felix

Usain who? Never heard of him… We’re too busy obsessin’ over Allyson Felix who beat Bolt’s world record for the most gold medals at the track and field World Championships. Allyson landed her 12th gold medal on the mixed-gender 4x400m relay team.

No biggie.

Oh yeah, and did we mention she gave birth just 10 months ago? Felix’s first gold medal as a Mum was also the one that broke her tie with Usain Bolt. Just 32 weeks after giving birth to her daughter Camryn, Felix began power walking (and it clearly paid off!)

Allyson Felix now holds 12 World Titles. YES, MAMA.

Brigid Kosgei

No world record is safe from a fierce female. Meet Brigid Kosgei, on Sunday she smashed the women’s marathon world record. This twenty-five-year-old Kenyan runner finished the Chicago Marathon in just 2 hours, 14 minutes and 4 seconds. Beating former record holder Paula Radcliffe’s time by 81 seconds.

After crossing the finish line Kosgei said;

“I was not expecting this… But I felt my body was moving, moving, moving so I went for it. This is amazing for me.”

Brigid isn’t done just yet though, she says:

“I think 2:10 is possible for a lady. I am focused on reducing my time again.”
