Between 1988 and 1990, Manchester United were building their first great, title-winning side.
On the pitch, the team was struggling, but off it, the foundations were being put in place for English football dominance.
Joining already established players like Bryan Robson and Clayton Blackmore was striker Mark Hughes, who returned to the club in 1988 after leaving for Barcelona, and promising young teenager Lee Sharpe from Torquay United.
In 1989, Mike Phelan and Paul Ince were brought in to bolster the midfield, while Gary Pallister was signed to partner Steve Bruce at the back.
Results at the time were poor but the team being assembled was about to take English football by storm.
A win in the 1990 FA Cup final over Crystal Palace would help an under-pressure Sir Alex keep his job. He would go on to secure another 37 trophies during his time at Old Trafford.
