Since the birth of Asics back in 1949, with founder Kihachiro Onitsuka creating athletic shoes for the next gen, it’s made huge strides in the running game.
Initially creating a basketball shoe before moving onto the track, the brand’s been pushing the boundaries with ground-breaking technology to keep your foot feeling its best.
Not only that, but with stripped back designs making way for chunkier editions in the ‘90s and ‘00s, Asics has combined its ever-improving tech with these retro runners for the latest drop – the GEL-NYC.
Landing in three classic colourways for men, see what’s inspired the design below.
Work Them Your Way
Taking inspiration from the Y2K era, the old-school uppers nod to the Y2K GEL-NIMBUS 3 model, adding elements of the MC-PLUS V and tooling from the GEL CUMULUS 16.
This breathable yet durable upper creates a look that can be repped with shorts and a sweat-wicking top as part of your training gear, or with straight-fit chinos and an oversized tee when switching to the streets.
When GEL technology was introduced on the GT II in ’86, Asics knew then that it’d produced performance tech that could be used again and again on future sneakers. Having been refined and adapted for the modern athlete, the GEL-NYC pairs a lightweight and responsive foam midsole with rearfoot and forefoot GEL inserts. Paying close attention to every movement your foot makes, this combo reduces impact during heel strike, creates a smoother transition and levels up shock absorption to propel you forwards.
Not forgetting about grip, the split rubber outsole delivers essential traction underfoot when picking up the pace.
Reminiscent of the waves off the coasts of Kobe, the iconic Tiger Stripes are stitched to the sidewalls, with signature Asics branding stamped to the tongue and heel.
