Continuing the lineage of the 327, the New Balance XC-72 is all about retro-future design. The archive-inspired silhouette first dropped last year, combining the best of runners from the ‘70s to influence the future.
Fast forward to 2022 and the XC-72 is makin’ waves. It just dropped in a JD-exclusive Black and Grey colourway – as seen on football icon, Raheem Sterling.

Inspired by the World of Racing
Over a year in the making, the New Balance XC-72 was designed by Charlotte Lee; the brain behind both the 327 and 237.
The design follows in its predecessor’s footsteps, looking to ‘70s runners but adding a fresh, modern edge. Finding a new angle to create the XC-72, Lee was inspired by the NB Gator. Less well known in the archives, the Gator reps a unique outsole design and the spiky elements of the 72 are taken directly from the look of the Gator.
Not stopping there, she also took inspo from concept cars. With a retro racing tongue and a square toe, these futuristic trainers aim to keep the heritage look, but switch it up to create something you’ve not seen before.
Up top, the XC-72 sports a suede and recycled mesh upper with a stability heel clip that nods to the 620’s herringbone outsole pattern. They’re sat on a vertically split outsole, which combines two hard ground traction designs: the XC15’s ‘gripper’ and the 375’s studded pattern. To finish up, Lee opted for an oversized ‘N’ logo to the sidewalls, a bold look just like on the 327.
Cop Sterling’s Style
On rest days, Sterling is gearing up in head-to-toe New Balance heat. Better yet, it’s all exclusive to JD.
He’s lacing up in an only-at-JD colourway of the XC-72, pairing ‘em with a Thunder Blue 1/4 Zip and Track Pants combo for laidback comfort. From tracksuits to jeans, these trainers are your go-to this season.
