Nike’s Heroes in Sustainability: Meet Jonathan (@jonathan.schoeck)

To celebrate the launch of Nike’s new Air VaporMax 2020 Flyknit, we’ve teamed up with a whole team of Heroes in Sustainability. Over the past few weeks, we have had the low down on Michael, Victoria, Widya, Penny and Malin. This time, we’re talking sustainability with Jonathan (@jonathan.schoeck).

Jonathan is a vegan fashion, lifestyle and fitness content creator and influencer, focusing on sustainability. Based in the beautiful city of Berlin, fashion and health have always played an important role in his life, and motivated him to create and share content on those topics. He shares his daily life and experiences on Instagram and TikTok, inspiring people to follow a more conscious and sustainable lifestyle. Let’s find out more…

What inspired you to become vegan?

After travelling to Thailand, I decided to become vegan in December 2017. In Thailand, I had a lot of time to think and I realised that a high meat consumption is harmful for my health. At this point I’d been sick and tired a lot and knew that I simply had to change something. So, I stopped consuming any animal products like milk and eggs and immediately started to feel better.

How do you aim to live a more sustainable life, what changes are you making?

I stopped supporting fast fashion. Now I buy less, but higher quality pieces that mean better conditions for the workers. Also, I got into vintage fashion! I can’t wait to pair some of my vintage pieces with the Nike’s Air VaporMax 2020 Flyknit, which are made with at least 50% recycled content by weight! On top of that, I have sold my car and started cycling or walking to avoid damaging the environment.

What tips would you give to your followers to work towards a sustainable lifestyle?

Just start step by step. Every small success gets you further and will get you closer to your goal. For me, it also helped to talk to others or follow the content of people who have already reached this goal. There are already so many tips and opportunities out there to help you live more sustainably.

Do you think that there is a difference between the chances for men and women when it comes to the sustainability?

Definitely not! Every person can contribute to this, whether you are old, young, male or female. It’s all about working on this together to have an effect.

Do you think that men’s fashion will become more sustainable in the future?

We are definitely moving in the right direction. Vintage fashion is really popular at the moment. Also, there are a lot more brands valuing quality and sustainability and more people supporting these. With social media, we are not only up to date but we can use our reach to share this message with others.
